When we talk about training we always think in terms of things we need to do to upgrade to the next license class and that is a laudable cause. I had the pleasure of talking with an old time ham today and the conversation somehow landed on code. You may remember that it was at one time something that all hams were either proficient in or wanted to be. Well as the conversation continue he had an idea that it might be fun (remember why we are hams) to have some classes to learn or relearn Morris code. And then start a code net on 2M.
Well I have to say that Gene K9UOK has stirred my interest, and I wonder if it just me or is anyone else interested in getting back to our roots and having some fun.

I would like to give CW a try. Code is and always has been a respected mode and skill to use in the Amateur community.

i would love to learn code. i have been trying to but no luck doing it on my own. I have tried to download a course from http://www.kkn.net/~k7qo/ i got an email about it from the Indy Ham yahoo group. the only problem with it is that its in an ISO file and i have no clue how to convert it. Rob, you you do let me know

Use a standard cd/dvd burner and put it on a disk

I have a paddle with my Icom 706, and would be willing to work CW on 2 meters. We can learn together.
I am not quick, and I recall only about 1/2 of the letters, and hardly any of the procedurals.

Since it has been several months I suspect you have already burned the ISO to disk but if not there is a free program called MagicDisc that allows you to mount ISOs on virtual drives. You can download it from

Supposedly it works with Vista and Windows 7 but I have only used it with 32-bit versions of 2003 and XP.

I also LOVE code but a little rusty. (well maybe alot)
I remember in the military they taught us verbal code (ditty dah-dit) and then we used flash cards along with listening to code tapes and typing it. It seemed easier to type than write it. We started with 5 groups per min on up to 20. The easiest way to learn code is "repetition". I used to be good at receiving code but not sending. So, that would certainly require some practice for me without a doubt!

Rob and I have discussed setting up one of the Field Day radios as a CW radio. It would be great if we could have some people making CW contacts during Field Day. I believe the last time we had code contacts was during the Field Day at Westwood Park. That was three or four Field Days ago.
